What happens if I don’t have a marriage contract?

Does signing a marriage contract mean we are legally married?
In short, no. This contract deals with your assets and will only be effective once you are married. You are legally married once you sign with your marriage officer.
Can I sign one after getting married?
Yes, you can, but it’s going to involve the court. If you choose to get a marriage contract after being married, you will need to make an application to court and hire lawyers to change your marriage system. This is obviously a more expensive route.
Do I need a lawyer?
Yes and no. Technically you could draft your own marriage contract, but you need a qualified lawyer who is also a notary public to execute and lodge your contract with the deeds office. This sounds complicated because it is, that’s why we suggest you leave it to us.
